Matrix-Fights-Square-Logo-___400x400PHILADELPHIA, PA – Coming off the heels of last month’s announcement that Matrix Fights (@MatrixFights) would return to active promotions on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 headlined by a catchweight dream match between JESUS “CHAVO” MARTINEZ and LEVON “DA MAYNMAN” MAYNARD, the promotion today announced that current Bellator MMA fighter WILL MARTINEZ has been added to the event as well.

Martinez, 9-3-1 and a former Bellator MMA tournament semifinalist, has agreed to compete in a special lightweight attraction against Ian Rammel (7-6). Rammel is a one-time Bellator MMA veteran who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio.

“First, we wanted to thank Scott Coker, Rich Chou, Zach Light and the entire team at Bellator for giving Matrix Fights permission to promote Will on this show,” said Matrix Fights promoter Sam Caplan (@SamCaplanMMA). “Will has his own school (Martinez BJJ) in Philadelphia and for the past year has fought all over the country on Spike TV. Matrix wanted to schedule a homecoming fight for him so that his fans, friends, students and family could see him fight in person since it’s been a while since he’s fought locally.

“At Matrix, we pride ourselves on promoting and hosting events instead of holding just random shows. Adding an active member of the Bellator roster to the card definitely creates a special event-like feel.”
Matrix Fights 9 will be held at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory, which is just minutes from Martinez’s school. Naturally, he expressed a great deal of excitement when reached for comment.

“It will be an honor to fight on the Dec. 5 Matrix card in front of my hometown crowd,” Martinez began. “I’m so excited to show my fans and students how much I’ve improved since my last fight.
“Ian Rammel is a really tough opponent who has fought some high-level fighters in his career at a few different weight classes. I can’t wait to test myself at 155 lbs., where I started my career. I feel stronger and better than ever and we’re coming to fight.”

Rammel is known as a fighter willing to face anyone under any circumstance. He made it into the third round against former NCAA champion Bubba Jenkins at Bellator 109 in November of 2013 and even fought Bellator middleweight Brian Rogers at 185 lbs. on a Strikeforce card in 2011. Rammel was just one of 11 fighters to accept the fight on Dec. 5 against Martinez and while he knows he’s walking into the lion’s den, he is unfazed.

“Obviously no one wants to go to someone’s backyard for a fight but my goals the same and my focus is unwavering,” the 13-fight veteran answered succinctly when asked for his thoughts on the matchup.

In addition Martinez vs. Rammel, Will’s brother and Bellator MMA veteran Jesus “Chavo” Martinez will headline the show vs. fellow Bellator veteran LeVon “Da Maynman” Maynard. Matrix has also scheduled fights between local Philly featherweights Brylan Van Artsdalen and Steve McCabe; an additional featherweight contest between Ryan Cafaro and Matt Kakareka; as well as a welterweight contest between Jo “Distric” Meunier and Cheron Gregory.
